Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris

It's impressive the way Charlaine Harris keeps Sookie Stackhouse very 'real' despite a grossly unrealistic story line. Vampire boyfriends and witchy roommates aside- Sookie Stackhouse is a character that all women can relate to in her efforts to be a good person, a strong woman, a hard worker, and a respectable citizen- all without smudging her mascara, compromising a fragile self-esteem, or appearing weak or dependent. There have been times in this series where Sookie has had  a thought and I've been able to sympathize whole-heartedly.  I've never fought a vampire or befriended a werewolf but I have been THERE!
