Bee Season by Myla Goldberg

I was very taken by the flowing writing style that the author uses in the first half of this book. I thought for sure that I was going to be enchanted the whole way through. I was very wrong. This book ends up taking a completely bizzarre turn. Characters end up chanting and 'leaving themselves'. There's a certifiable lunatic, and she's not even one of the ones doing the chanting. The whole time I was wondering what happened to the little girl who was trying to win a spelling bee?
